When 20th Century Fox released their superhero blockbuster Deadpool in February, fans who stayed until the very end of the credits got to see a special tag where Ryan Reynolds came out and revealed that Cable will be featured in the sequel, Deadpool 2. At the time, it was considered a bold move, since a sequel was never guaranteed in the first place. After the movie started breaking box office records left and right, it was quickly confirmed that a sequel is happening, with Ryan Reynolds returning and the entire creative team coming back as well. Ever since the movie's release, fans have been pondering who should play the iconic Cable, and today we have word that another actor has expressed interest in the role.

Shortly after Deadpool's release, Avatar star Stephen Lang revealed through social media that he wanted to play Cable. But now there is a new contender in the mix. During a recent interview with Nerdist, Dolph Lundgren was asked if he would ever consider returning to the superhero genre, after playing the title character in the 1989 adaptation The Punisher. Here's what the actor had to say, expressing his interest in playing Cable.

"That's a good question. I haven't watched a lot of these superhero movies; for some reason, I don't know, I'm just busy making films. I did hear in... Deadpool, isn't there a character named Cable that's coming? Like, he's a big guy? I guess I could kick some butt doing that, I suppose. We'll see. When I saw the picture, he looks a little bit like Ivan Drago mixed with Gunner Jensen mixed with... I don't know."

Ironically, during Deadpool's post-credit scene, Ryan Reynolds joked that Dolph Lundgren was a candidate for the Cable role, along with other contenders such as Mel Gibson and Keira Knightley. It isn't known yet when Cable will actually be cast, but we know that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were brought back to write the sequel script. We don't know if the script is finished yet. Tim Miller, a VFX guru who made his directorial debut with Deadpool, is also returning to direct the sequel.

Dolph Lundgren most recently starred in an uncredited role in Hail, Caesar and in the straight-to-video sequel Kindergarten Cop 2. He currently has a number of movies in various stages of development and production, although it isn't known which movie will arrive first. We'll have to wait and see who lands the Cable role in Deadpool 2, so be sure to check back for more updates on this highly-anticipated sequel.
