A third Deadpool film is on the way, and while there’s no timeline for when Wade Wilson will be returning to the big screen, a new update is teasing that an essential part of the development process is complete. The official Deadpool Twitter account shared a photo of the loveable Peter, as played by Rob Delaney, in the room where he was recruited for X-Force in Deadpool 2. The scene has been slightly edited, now featuring several references to products and projects related to star Ryan Reynolds:

As the caption reads, Deadpool 3 has its product placement all squared away and is now beginning the actual process of developing the film started. Eagle-eyed viewers of the photo can spot references to Aviation American Gin, Mint Mobile, and the upcoming Welcome To Wrexham docuseries that Reynolds is helping produce for FX. Obviously, the post is just a bit of fun from the folks behind Deadpool, but since there were plenty of meta-references to Reynolds in the first two films, any of these so-called “brand integrations” wouldn’t exactly be surprising to see in Deadpool 3.

Even though it’s not a true update, it’s still good to hear something from the Deadpool franchise in an official capacity. The last significant bit of news about the third Deadpool film came back in March when Reynolds confirmed that Shawn Levy will be directing the threequel. Levy and Reynolds have already teamed up twice before, first on the 2021 breakout hit Free Guy, followed by the Netflix exclusive film The Adam Project earlier this year. As Reynolds stated upon making the directorial announcement, “The third film in my Shawn Levy trilogy will be a tad more stabby.”

Deadpool 3 has been in the works ever since the second film in the franchise brought in more than $786 million worldwide four years ago. Since then, 20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney, putting all of Fox’s Marvel characters into the hands of Kevin Feige, and development has stalled while Reynolds has kept busy with other projects. Feige has said that Deadpool 3 will be set in the MCU, and will indeed be rated R, but how exactly Wade and company will fit into the Disney-run Marvel world remains to be seen. The violence and raunchiness of the Deadpool franchise is unlike anything that’s in the MCU, and it may be a tall task to make that style fit in with the other Marvel Studios properties.

The 45-year-old Reynolds also announced late last year that he was taking a sabbatical from acting after wrapping the Apple TV+ musical Spirited. While it’s unknown how long of a break Reynolds intends to take, production on Deadpool 3 isn’t going to be happening anytime soon. Looking at the upcoming Marvel slate, the latest film that’s on the calendar is The Marvels in July 2023, with nothing else officially announced after that point. Since it doesn’t seem like Deadpool 3 will begin filming this year, that would mean a 2023 start at the earliest, which may not mean a premiere for the film until 2024. While it’s exciting to hear from the minds behind Deadpool on Twitter, it may be quite a bit longer until any substantial updates are put out about Wade Wilson’s return.
