Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has detailed the difficulty of bringing both Wade Wilson and Logan together in Deadpool 3. Speaking with The Wrap, Reynolds described the Deadpool sequel, which will feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, as a “tightrope walk” when it comes to tone.

"I think it's a tightrope walk. I mean most of these movies are always a tightrope walk of tone, so in this instance, though, you have a collision of two pretty iconic characters that exist in the Marvel Ancillary Universe [laughs] — we're in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point."

According to Reynolds, Deadpool 3 is a balancing act, as they endeavor to do justice to both Deadpool and Wolverine while navigating their entrance into the MCU.

"It's really kind of finding a way to service both of these characters that feels extraordinarily authentic to each of them, and I think these two wrongs actually will make a right in a pretty great way."

Plot details for Deadpool 3 remain a mystery at this stage, but it is expected that the sequel will find Wade and Logan embarking on a road trip together. A road trip that will see the pair at each other's throats. And then at each other's throats again after they've both regenerated.

The news of Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 came as a major surprise for almost everyone. It had long been stated that Jackman would make his final appearance as the X-Men member in 2017’s Logan, with the actor recently explaining why he decided to reprise the role in the Deadpool threequel.

"I really thought I was done. Like, I was at peace with it,” Jackman said of his planned final appearance in Logan. “I got asked every day, either in interviews, or Ryan Reynolds ringing me, 'Can we do it again?' I'm like, 'No, I'm done.' Someone said to me, I think it was Deb, she's my wife, she said, 'You know, after this, what is it you really wanna do?' And I was just driving down a day later and I thought, 'What do I want?' And it came to me like that, because when I keep thinking of me and Ryan and Deadpool and Wolverine, which are classic comic book rivals, there's also a dynamic that I've never really got to do before as Wolverine."

Now, with Wolverine all set to make a triumphant comeback alongside The Merc with a Mouth, Jackman has his sights set on making this portrayal better than ever. And is gearing up to hit the gym, and hit the gym hard.

“I’m doing eight shows a week right now, so I’m only lifting weights three times a week,” he said. “But I’ll be getting into it once or twice a day as soon as this is done in a month. And I’ll have six months to prep, and I always have the same approach every time I go in. I want it to be better than ever, to be in better shape than ever, more able to do things than ever,” he added. “I just get the added incentive of taking Ryan Reynolds out each day.”

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 3 is now scheduled to be released on November 8, 2024.
