Deadpool 3 is one of the most anticipated films in the MCU. And fans may have gotten a reason to get even more excited. Hugh Jackman just dropped a hint to a small French news outlet that he might be playing more than one Wolverine. Though the comment is short, it gives fans hope of seeing a multiversal Deadpool where more than one Wolverine will be coming out to play. Hugh Jackman played two Wolverines before in the 2017 film Logan, but there he was, a scientifically altered clone. In Deadpool 3, fans think he may be more than one Wolverine variant.

If Deadpool 3 starts adding Wolverine variants, possibilities open wide for the film's plot. Shawn Levy, director and friend of Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds is already incredibly excited to be working on a self-aware movie with such a hilarious tone. As he writes the script, he may dig deep to find other Wolverines of comic book lore. Deadpool 2 ended with Wade Wilson traveling through time to find one particular version of Wolverine. Now that Deadpool and Wolverine are officially flying the Marvel flag, Deadpool 3 could go back to any X-Men movie or comic book and find an exciting variant of Wolverine.

How Do We Know Deadpool 3 Will Have Wolverine Variants?

While doing an interview about his latest film, The Son, Hugh Jackman told the small French news site Le Parisien that he would be performing “a dual role” in his part as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Fans have been given that inch, and they are taking a mile. But why shouldn’t they? Since the premiere of the Disney+ series Loki, Marvel fans have been looking for variants of their favorite superheroes across the multiverse. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sealed the deal when it almost automatically made anything possible in the MCU. It may not be a big clue hearing that Jackman will play a dual role, but it does mean that we could run into several different versions of Wolverine.

When Deadpool 2 ended, Wade Wilson went back in time to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and visited a Wolverine for the first time. It was a great nod to the fans because X-Men Origins was the first time Deadpool had been featured in a film, and his character was distinctly terrible. Everyone, even Ryan Reynolds, regrets seeing that version of Wade Wilson. So Deadpool’s chance to go back in time and put a bullet in his variant’s head got a big cheer from the fans. But now that we know Deadpool has a way to travel through time, if not through the multiverse itself, he could travel all over the old X-Men movies to assemble an army of Wolverines.

When Deadpool went back to X-Men Origins to have his conversation with Wolverine, he said that one day he would come calling for him. Just from this post-credits scene, it’s likely Deadpool 3 will pick up from its old film and take this Wolverine out of his timeline. It could also serve the plot and provide some meta-commentary, in the sense that Deadpool is removing this Wolverine from the Fox-owned X-Men universe and bringing him into the MCU. Also, Deadpool has a motive to remove that particular timeline from his own history. Generally, it seems like an excellent place to start regarding all the Wolverines you could pick.

Another good target for Deadpool 3 would be the Wolverine from the film Logan. When Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman first announced Wolverine would be a part of the upcoming Deadpool sequel, fans had an outcry concerning Wolverine’s timeline in Logan. The film's biggest draw was that the near-immortal character finally died in the movie. It was explained to those fans that Logan had still happened in the future, even by the reckoning of the current MCU timeline, so the movie's events would remain canon. The film also includes Jackman playing a Wolverine clone. But the fact fans had made such a big ruckus at all makes that particular Wolverine variant a juicy peach for writers to pluck.

There are plenty of Wolverine variants from the comic books for Hugh Jackman to play. But probably the only variant he couldn’t play is the one that’s already a part of the MCU. A few months ago, fans spotted an easter egg in the Disney+ series She-Hulk. When the titular character opened her laptop, a little clickbait article in the corner of her screen mentioned a man with metal claws getting into a bar fight. It was big news since it meant a Wolverine was already somewhere, roaming around the MCU. We just hadn’t met him yet. Whether he gets introduced in Deadpool 3 remains to be seen. But for now, Hugh Jackman may have to reprise his role several times in a multiverse of Deadpool.
