Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment has been responsible for several excellent shows over the years. From Leverage and Leverage Redemption, which just received a renewal from IMDb TV to The Outpost, Devlin’s studio has produced one quality project after another. And now, news comes from Deadline that a new Devlin-led project, The Ark, has received a series order from SyFy.

SyFy has ordered a 12 episode order for the show, which will begin production in March in Serbia. Casting is the next step, with a cast expected to be announced soon. Devlin and Johnathan Glassner of Stargate SG-1 will serve as executive producers and showrunners.

The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race. The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life. With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.

The Ark is a perfect fit for Syfy audiences and we know fans will gravitate to this heart-racing story from Dean Devlin, one of the most accomplished and respected sci-fi writers working today,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCU Entertainment and Streaming. “With the recent success of both Resident Alien and Chucky, the network is home to several of the most creative storytellers working in all of television.”

Devlin’s Electric Entertainment has had a history of successful shows. The Ark continues a business model that Electric Entertainment has employed successfully for each of its shows since TNT picked up their show Leverage in 2008.

Electric Entertainment acts as the studio, partnering with a specific network for domestic distribution while retaining the rights for global distribution themselves. It is a model that has worked for Devlin’s company since Leverage and there is no reason for them to change their practice for this new show.

Glassner and Devlin Have Worked Together Before

Glassner and Devlin worked together previously on CW’s The Outpost, where they had a similar working arrangement, both serving as executive producers for the four-season show.

Some fans are curious about the working arrangement between the two producers.

Devlin co-wrote and co-produced the original Stargate movie. Glassner developed Stargate SG-1 for television alongside Brad Wright. Devlin did not like the direction that Glassner and Wright took his creation and he and his co-writer, Roland Emmerich, had plans to film a direct sequel to the original movie, disregarding the tv shows.

While fans might like to think that Devlin working with Glassner might indicate a softening in his stance on Stargate SG-1, it is more likely that Devlin simply identified a talented producer that he wants to work with. And after working with Glassner on The Outpost, he is more than willing to continue a positive working relationship.

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to partner with Syfy again and can’t think of a better collaborator than Jonathan Glassner to bring this series to life,” Devlin said.

The Ark will air on SyFy. No release date has yet been announced.
