The next video game to get a feature film adaptation is Death Stranding. Per Deadline, the news comes shortly after the announcement that the hit video game would be getting a sequel. Hideo Kojima, who designed and directed the game, is on board for the movie as a producer under his Kojima Productions banner. He's partnering up with Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovici of Hammerstone Studios on the project. Lebovici will produce alongside Kojima while Kojima Productions US serves as executive producer with Allan Ungar.

This will be the first feature film from Kojima Productions, and word is that it won't be a direct adaptation of the video game. While no specific plot details have been revealed, word is the movie will "introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe." By setting the film in the same universe as the games, the door is open for established characters to appear, such as Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges. With that said, no cast members have yet been announced, and it's also unclear who will write and direct the adaptation. In any case, Kojima is excited to get started with work on the movie.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima, who also collaborated with Reedus on the canceled game Silent Hills, in a statement. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen.”

Lebovici added, "We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation. Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production.”

Death Stranding Is Becoming a Movie

The game, met with positive reviews upon its release, is set in a post-apocalyptic United States that's been decimated by destructive creatures. It follows Norman Reedus as courier Sam Porter Bridges on his mission to deliver supplies to remote colonies. Boasting an all-star cast, the game united Reedus with Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Guillermo del Toro, and Nicolas Winding Refn.

The Death Stranding movie doesn't yet have a premiere date. Death Stranding 2 was just announced at The Game Awards, though the video game sequel also doesn't yet have a release date set. A special trailer has been unveiled, however, and you can check that out below. While primarly focusing on Seydoux, it features an appearance from a returning Reedus.
