In theaters September 2016, Lionsgate has released a first look photo from the true-story drama Deepwater Horizon. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell, the movie has begun principle photography in New Orleans, Louisiana. The movie is directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Matthew Sand and Matthew Michael Carnahan.

Deepwater Horizon is based on the true events that occurred on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. The story chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters in world history. Mark Wahlberg portrays real-life hero Mike Williams, as depicted in the first image from the set.

Also starring in the movie are Academy Award-nominee John Malkovich, Dylan O'Brien, Gina Rodriguez, and Kate Hudson. The story in Deepwater Horizon is based on the upon the 2010 New York Times article Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing for di Bonaventura Pictures. Lionsgate will release Deepwater Horizon via its Summit Entertainment in September of next year 2016.
