Back in May, we got our first look at Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming thriller Deepwater Horizon, as production got under way in New Orleans. We haven't heard much about this true story adaptation since then, but today Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer, along with a poster and new photos. This first footage cuts back and forth between Mike Williams' (Mark Wahlberg) family life and his work on the oil rig Deepwater Horizon, which became the site of an unprecedented disaster.

On April 20, 2010, the world's largest man-made disaster occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), this story honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone's lives forever. Mark Wahlberg leads an all-star cast that also includes Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson and Dylan O'Brien.

Peter Berg directs from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z) and Matthew Sand (Ninja Assassin) and from a screen story by Matthew Sand. The story is based on the upon the 2010 New York Times article Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing for di Bonaventura Pictures.

Lionsgate has set a September 30 release date for Deepwater Horizon, which is shaping up to be quite the competitive weekend. Five movies are set to open in wide release that weekend, with Deepwater Horizon going up against 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Relativity Media's Masterminds, STX Entertainment's Besties and High Top Releasing's Delirium. We'll have to wait and see if Deepwater Horizon has what it takes to rise above its competitors in late September.

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion killed 11 people and injured 17 others, with more than 200 million gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. The oil spill affected the coastlines of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, with over 8,000 animals reportedly killed as a result of the spill. Take a look at the first footage, poster and photos from Deepwater Horizon, and stay tuned for more as we get closer to the September 30 release.
