Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke was reported to have been involved in a single-car crash in Malibu, California when the 97-year-old’s car skidded in wet weather and smashed into a gate. According to TMZ, Van Dyke lost control of his Lexus LS 500 while driving in the rain and was left with a bloody nose and possible concussion as a result. The incident happened on Wednesday morning, and the much-loved actor was treated by paramedics at the scene but was said to have refused a hospital trip.

The incident is not the first time Van Dyke has been involved in car trouble. In 2013 the actor was pulled out of his Jaguar on the 101 freeway in the Calabasas area of Los Angeles when the vehicle burst into flames. Thankfully, it seems that his latest brush with danger has not ended badly for the nonagenarian, but it was reported that it has been requested for him to retake a driving test due to his advanced age.

While it does seem that there were some extenuating circumstances around the crash, and despite Van Dyke’s ever exuberant appearance, the main thoughts following the incident seem to be centered on his safety. Although there were no other vehicles involved, and the actor himself appears to have suffered just minor injuries, there is always the possibility that it could have ended much worse for the national treasure.

From his comedy TV series, through performances in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, to his recent surprise appearance on The Masked Singer, Dick Van Dyke has been adored across several generations, and at the age of 97 it would not be surprising if the actor wanted to just kick back and relax. However he still seems adamant that the show must go on and this has seen him continue to make appearances in both movies and on TV.

Prior to the arrival of the Covid pandemic, Van Dyke made appearances in the Jim Carrey series Kidding, providing a voice to Hopscotch the Sasquatch, and returned to play Mr. Dawes, Jr in Mary Poppins Returns, a role that saw him playing the son of the character he played under extensive make up back in 1964’s original movie. After appearing as the Gnome in the season 9 premiere of The Masked Singer, he is set to star in the movie Capture the Flag, which is said to be pre-production.

There are many who will be thankful that Van Dyke’s car accident does not seem to have caused him any serious injury and he will be able to continue to make occasional appearances in more projects as he wishes. It does not really need to be said that everyone reading will wish him a speedy recovery from his reported injuries, and hopefully this will be the last such incident to befall the movie and TV legend.
