Earlier this month, director Richard Donner broke one of the biggest news stories all year, when he revealed that the long-awaited sequel The Goonies 2 is actually happening. During a new interview with TMZ, Richard Donner revealed that The Goonies executive producer Steven Spielberg actually came up with the story for this sequel.

"Hopefully we're going to get this done. Period. Steven came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don't do it without him. He came up with another story line, and he's right on."

When asked if any of the original cast members such as Josh Brolin or Sean Astin will come back, the director had this to say.

"God knows. It's up to them. If they have any sense, they will. If they don't, they won't."

Steven Spielberg actually received a story credit on The Goonies, with Chris Columbus writing the screenplay. There had been a script written for the sequel many years ago, which featured the original stars (Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Jonathan Ke Quan) and their children going on a new adventure. It was also rumored that another writer was brought on in 2008, but no story details have been confirmed at this time.

Corey Feldman also revealed earlier this month that Chris Columbus is helping out with the script in some capacity, stating he has complete faith in Chris Columbus, Steven Spielberg and Richard Donner to create more "movie magic" with the sequel.

It should be noted that both Jeff Cohen (Chunk) and Jonathan Ke Quan (Data) have retired from acting, but it's possible they could be lured back to reprise their roles.
