The arrival of Disney+ has allowed the House of Mouse to produce several movies and TV shows that would otherwise never have been green-lit. Among the upcoming revivals is Disenchanted, a sequel to the Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey film Enchanted, an animated/live-action musical hybrid that turned the traditional Disney Princess story on its head. Almost two decades later, the belated sequel Disenchanted will bring back its two leads along with James Marsden and Idina Menzel, and it has been reported that reshoots on the movie will happen next month in New York.

Disenchanted is currently slated to make its premiere on Disney+ in the fall, just ahead of the other nostalgic revival movie, Hocus Pocus 2. Still, with reshoots set to get underway, there is no word yet on whether it will hold its current release date or be another casualty of the Covid pandemic’s impact on movie studio schedules. It has been reported that, unlike many of the recent Marvel reshoots, which seem to be all about refining shots and adding additional character pieces, Disenchanted’s return to filming is due to mixed reactions from early test screenings.

Although additional filming could resolve some issues raised by those early screenings, a long line of movies have tried to change up the formula based on public feedback, and the results have been varied, to say the least. Even something like The Simpsons Movie was said to have undergone several changes due to early screen tests, and the end result potentially ended up slightly worse for it. Whether Disenchanted can avoid a similar fate is something we will just have to wait and find out.

2007’s Enchanted was a hit with moviegoers on its release, easily making back its $85 million budget and then some, so many people expected a sequel being discussed from an early stage. The sequel seemed to be solid ground in 2010 when it was announced that the production team, along with composer Alan Menken and star James Marsden were all on board to move ahead with the project. Four years later, there had been very little change, and although the production was said to gear up to film in 2017, that never transpired. Finally, in December 2020, it was officially announced that the sequel was ready to move forward as a Disney+ movie, with the original cast returning.

The synopsis of the movie reads:

“Fifteen years after her happily ever after, Giselle, Robert, and Morgan move to a new house in the suburb of Monroeville. The community is overseen by Malvina Monroe, who has nefarious intentions for the family. When problems arise, Giselle wishes that their lives were the perfect fairy tale. The spell backfires, with Giselle rushing to save her family and her homeland of the Kingdom of Andalasia before the clock strikes midnight.”

After filming concluded in July 2021, it seemed that all was happy and magical in the world of Disenchanted, and it was moving steadily towards its fall 2022 release. Whenever the movie arrives, fans of the original movie will be delighted to see the return of Giselle in a new adventure, and it is certain to be another big success for the Disney+ platform.
