With Maleficent set for release next summer, Walt Disney Pictures is moving forward with another live-action rendition of a classic villain, Cruella, based on Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

Aline Brosh McKenna has signed on to write the screenplay, although no story details were given. The writer also provided the script for Disney's live-action Cinderella, which is currently in production. Andrew Gunn (Sky High, Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain) is producing.

Cruella de Vil first appeared in Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, which was adapted into the 1961 animated classic 101 Dalmatians, where Betty Lou Gerson voiced the iconic character.

Glenn Close played Cruella in Disney's 1996 live-action 101 DalmationsThis won't be the first live-action adapation of the character either, with Glenn Close playing the villain, who steals the adorable puppies to make a coat out of dalmatian fur, in Disney's 1996 live-action film 101 Dalmatians, as well as the 2000 sequel 102 Dalmatians.

It isn't known if Disney is taking an approach similar to Maleficent, which is told from the villain's point-of-view rather than Sleeping Beauty's perspective.

Aline Brosh McKenna's other screenwriting credits include The Devil Wears Prada, Morning Glory, I Don't Know How She Does It and the upcoming Annie remake.
