Reese Witherspoon has signed on to star in and produce Disney's Tink, a live action version of the classic Tinkerbell character. The project was originally developed by Disney several years ago, with Elizabeth Banks initially attached to star, but now Reese Witherspoon is taking over as the beloved Peter Pan character. No director is attached at this time, but Disney has brought on Victoria Strouse (Finding Nemo, Finding Dory) to write the screenplay.

No story details were given, but insiders claim it will "play with the idea and the timeline" of the Peter Pan narrative. The project is being developed in the same vein as Disney's 2014 hit Maleficent, conceived as "the story you don't know" that gives fans a new perspective on Tink. Unlike the big-budget Maleficent, Tink is targeting a mid-range budget. It's worth noting that 20th Century Fox is also developing their own Untitled Tinker Bell Project, which has Melissa McCarthy attached to star as the title character and Shawn Levy set to direct.

Tinkerbell was initially a minor, non-speaking character in J.M. Barrie's original Peter Pan story. After appearing in the 1953 Disney animated adaptation, Tinkerbell become one of Disney's most popular characters, spawning a recent series of animated straight-to-video features, with the most recent being this year's Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast. Reese Witherspoon is producing alongside her Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea. The actress can currently be seen in Hot Pursuit, and she is also attached to star in and produce Pale Blue Dot for Fox Searchlight.
