Prior to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there were plenty of rumors about who could be making an appearance in the movie. These rumors ranged from Tom Cruise as an Iron Man variant, which we now know was never going to happen, to an appearance by Deadpool, which it turns out was a real possibility. According to the Marvel Studios Assembled episode for the Doctor Strange sequel, it appears that one scene in the movie was going to feature a universe where the Ryan Reynolds character is a major celebrity.

Although Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivered a fair number of cameos and surprised, the expectations of fans meant the movie ended up letting down many who were imagining so much more than they were given. Like much of the MCU’s Phase 4, what fans want against what Kevin Feige and his team are willing to give right now are sometimes a world apart, but it looks like one major fan-theory almost did happen.

In the movie, Doctor Strange, played one again by Benedict Cumberbatch, travels through the multiverse thanks to the powers of MCU newcomer America Chavez. While there are shots of many different universes, including an animated one, one made of paint, many set in the past and more, there were plans to see Strange passing through a world full of billboard posters featuring Deadpool, with one of the main images being the Deadpool 2 promo art that saw the Merc with A Mouth becoming part of Michaelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.” While this would have been a very fleeting appearance by the much-loved character, it would have been certainly enough to appease some fans.

Along with the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Deadpool is one of the Marvel properties brought back to Marvel Studios by the merger between the Walt Disney Company and 20th Century Fox. While it was unclear for a while exactly how Disney would react to the violent, profanity-filled, R-rated world of Deadpool, fans have been assured that Deadpool 3 is happening, it will be part of the MCU, but it will also be exactly the same Deadpool that everyone loves.

Currently, there has been no indication given as to when Deadpool will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If it is in his own third movie, there is going to be a lengthy wait for that, as work is still ongoing with the script and there has not even been a confirmed start of filming date. If the character is going to make an unexpected appearance in another project first, there has been no indication of what that could entail, and again it seems unlikely to be something that will happen in any of the upcoming movies or TV shows.

Kevin Feige has teased that he will be unveiling the next leg of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future, and maybe then we will find out a little more about when we can expect to see Deadpool make his MCU debut, as well and many other things about the next phase of the ongoing Marvel saga.
