A new piece of promotional art for the upcoming Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives us our best look yet at Elizabeth Olsen’s return as Wanda Maximoff AKA The Scarlet Witch and her slightly altered new costume. Unveiled by Twitter user alias, the artwork shows Wanda floating through the air and displaying her powers and outfit, which made its debut in the Disney+ series WandaVision. The Scarlet Witch will have a prominent role in the Doctor Strange follow-up, with many theorizing that she will emerge as one of the movie’s antagonists.

Wanda Maximoff has not been given a superhero suit so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a franchise that the character has been a part of ever since appearing in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. This changed during the action-packed finale of WandaVision, which saw Wanda struggle to come to terms with the loss of Vision, and embrace her true power, an act that resulted in her sporting a new, updated version of her comic book costume. The Scarlet Witch’s role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is largely unknown, though the recently released trailer does show The Master of the Mystic Arts turn to her for help as he embarks on an adventure across the multiverse.

Elizabeth Olsen offered some insight into the movie itself, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set to be scarier than the usual MCU fare thanks to the involvement of Evil Dead director Sam Raimi. "I think it's scarier than Indiana Jones," Olsen previously said while speaking with Vanity Fair. "I think it definitely feels more Sam Raimi than that. So maybe that was the goal, but it definitely became something darker I think." She clarified, "Yea, not like [Raimi's] western [stuff]... Yes, the horror genre feeling of constant fear and thrill and misleads and playing with camera, playing with how the perspective of the depth of field in order to make the audience feel more anxious... It's more... I think it's more than like a glossy Indiana Jones movie. Which I love Indiana Jones, but I feel like it has a darker thing going on."

Spider-Man: No Way Home has now demonstrated the exciting implications inherent in introducing the Marvel multiverse. Following the events of that hugely successful outing, as well as the Disney+ series Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finds Dr. Stephen Strange continuing to understand the multiverse and fix the things that have been broken, bringing him face-to-face with an alternate version of himself, whose threat to humanity is too great for the combined forces of Strange, Wong, and The Scarlet Witch.

Alongside Dark Doctor Strange, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will introduce other variants of the title character, including a pony-tail sporting Defender Strange who, in the comics, is part of a superhero team that consists of Hulk, Namor, The Silver Surfer, and Valkyrie.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
