Marvel Studios can do no wrong and Doctor Strange has proved that in a big way. The movie has been surpassing expectations and now it has soared past another strange Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. With yet another solid weekend under its belt, Doctor Strange has overtaken Ant-Man at the worldwide box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, Doctor Strange has now pulled in a grand total of $571 million at the global box office. The movie added another $17.6 million to its domestic total this weekend. Ant-Man managed to pull in a grand total of $519 million during its entire run and Doctor Strange has already surpassed that by $52 million, and the movie still has a long way to go.

On paper Ant-Man and Doctor Strange couldn't be more different, aside from the fact that they are both movies based on superheroes, but they do share some similarities. Both of these movies have pushed the boundaries of the MCU beyond more typical superheroes and in both cases it was unclear how audiences would respond. Ant-Man represents one of the more modest total box office takes for Marvel Studios, but it was still enough to make the studio very happy considering the expectations they had for it. If Doctor Strange didn't make another dime Marvel would probably still be happy with what the movie managed to do, but this could wind up being a surprise on the level of something like Guardians of the Galaxy ($773 million worldwide), which would make them ecstatic.

The $519 million that Ant-Man grossed was enough for Marvel Studios to give the green light to a sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is due out on July 6, 2018. Given that Doctor Strange is already far beyond that it seems almost inevitable that Doctor Strange 2 will be announced at some point. We may have to wait though, because Kevin Feige has said that announcing any Phase 4 movies would be spoilers for what will happen in Avengers: Infinity War.

Currently, Doctor Strange sits in 10th place in terms of the global box office take for MCU movies, with The Avengers at the top with $1.5 billion. It seems likely that Doctor Strange could wind up overtaking Thor: The Dark World in the number seven spot, which managed to gross $644 million. But if things go really well, the number six spot could be in sight, which currently belongs to Captain America: The Winter Soldier with $714 million. Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen. It was directed by Scott Derrickson and is in theaters now.
