/doctor-strange-movie-benedict-cumberbatch-cast/Now that Marvel has confirmed actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the new Doctor Strange, the studio is focusing its casting efforts on finding the right actor to play The Ancient One. Latino Review reports that Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe are the studio's top candidates to play The Ancient One in this Marvel Phase Three adventure. It isn't clear at this point which of these actors is the front runner for the role.
It also isn't known how large of a role The Ancient One may have in this story, since we reported in August that Doctor Strange will not be an origin story, with Stephen Strange already established as a superhero. In the Marvel comics, The Ancient One is the previous Sorcerer Supreme, who serves as Strange's mentor. He also ends up training but ultimately rejecting Mordo, a character long rumored to be the villain in Doctor Strange. Whoever the bad guy may be, a rumor from last month suggested that the villain may be first introduced in the first Marvel Phase Three movie, Captain America: Civil War.
Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us from Evil) is directing Doctor Strange from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). It isn't known when production is scheduled to begin, but it will likely take place sometime after Captain America: Civil War.
