Doctor Strange is one of the few movies that was in development long before Marvel Studios even existed. Marvel had been working on the project independently, much like they were with Ant-Man, a few years before Marvel Studios was established. Next week, Marvel will launch Phase 3 of their lucrative MCU, with Captain America: Civil War, followed by Doctor Strange, arriving in theaters November 4. As fans noticed when the first trailer arrived earlier this month, the Sorcerer Supreme is a character unlike any we've ever seen in the MCU thus far. And star Benedict Cumberbatch agrees. He says this movie will push the Marvel Cinematic Universe to new heights.

Fans previously caught a glimpse at the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2014 blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, but Doctor Strange showcases some of the mystical elements of the MCU here on Earth. Benedict Cumberbatch recently spoke with Empire Online, teasing that everything about the movie is different from what fans have seen throughout the first two phases of the MCU. Here's what the actor had to say, claiming that this movie marks an important part of Marvel's evolution.

"It's a very different feel, different hero and different set of circumstances to what we've seen before. It's another moment during Marvel's evolution.

Scott Derrickson takes the helm for Doctor Strange, his first foray into the superhero genre after directing horror films such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil. Like many filmmakers before him, Scott Derrickson praised Marvel for letting him push the story to new levels, although he wouldn't delve into specifics. Here's what the filmmaker had to say about continually crossing the "line" they had set.

"We felt free to go as far as we could imagine, so we're doing a lot of things that I think have not been done before. Once we'd crossed a certain line we just kept going."

Unfortunately, neither Scott Derrickson nor Benedict Cumberbatch addressed the Ancient One controversy, which surfaced after the first trailer debuted just a few weeks ago. In the comics, The Ancient One is typically portrayed by an older Asian man, but Marvel decided to cast Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, which drew plenty of controversy after the first trailer arrived. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more updates on Doctor Strange as we get closer and closer to the November 4 release date.
