Marvel Cinematic Universe fans received a surprise at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home when the post credit scene turned out to be the previously rumored trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now thanks to a translation from the Disney Japan website, it looks like we also have the first full synopsis of the movie, which hints that there are dark times coming for the former Sorcerer Supreme when the film arrives in cinemas in May.

While the synopsis will probably soon be appearing across all Disney sites, avid fans noticed the Disney Japan site currently has a rather generous amount of information available on the Doctor Strange sequel, which is also the next Marvel movie to be released following directly on from the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Cosmic Circus reported a translation of the information available on the Japanese site, including the promise that it will be a very visual affair. The translation reads:

“The door of the multiverse, full of mystery and madness, opens.

“Now that Iron Man and Captain America have left after a fierce battle in Avengers: Endgame, former genius surgeon and the strongest magician of them all, Doctor Strange, is expected to play an active role as a central figure in the Avengers. However, using his magic to manipulate time and space at will with a forbidden spell that is considered the most dangerous has opened the door to a mysterious madness called “the Multiverse.” To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers’ most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange …

“Director Sam Raimi, who has expressed a unique world view, will captivate the whole world with overwhelming scale and unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space!”

While Marvel has been teasing their multiverse for over two years, various recent projects such as WandaVision and Loki have suggested actions that have invoked the destruction of the pillars and forces holding the multiverse at bay, but it seems that Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home was one step too far and now all hell is about to break loose on the MCU. More details in the synopsis explain that the threat to the universe is bigger than anything even the combined powers of Strange, Wong and Wanda can defeat, leading to the arrival of America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, and the return of Karl Mordo, with Chiwetel Ejiofor reprising his Doctor Strange role, as well as other cameos and additions that will likely remain secret up to the point of the movie’s release.

With fans already having been introduced to a “dark” variant of Doctor Strange in Marvel’s What If…? series, whether this is the same variant seen in the new trailer is something that will be revealed in good time.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in cinemas on May 6th, 2022.
