Earlier today, we showed you a bizarre video from Peter Jackson which teased that he may be directing an upcoming episode of Doctor Who in Season 10. While that isn't set in stone yet, fans still have two more episodes of Doctor Who Season 9 to enjoy, the season finale Hell Bent and the Christmas Special, which BBC One has announced will be called The Husbands of River Song, while revealing a new poster and photo. We reported back in September that Alex Kingston will be returning to the hit series as River Song, the longtime wife of the Time Lord.
It's Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from carols and comedy antlers. But when the Time Lord's help is requested he finds himself recruited into River Song's squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy! King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious and his giant robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and at a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time...
Alex Kingston has portrayed River Song on fifteen episodes of Doctor Who throughout the various seasons. She made her first Doctor Who appearance in 2008 in the two-part episode Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead. Showrunner Steven Moffat revealed in a recent interview that this episode takes place directly after the 2012 episode The Angels Take Manhattan, where the Doctor lost both Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill). The episode also takes place before 2013's The Name of the Doctor, where she died.
The episode's title is certainly intriguing, hinting that River Song is married to someone else other than the Time Lord. The return of River Song comes just after Doctor Who lost his latest travelling companion, Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, in the episode Face the Raven, which aired two weeks ago. The network and the producers have not yet announced who the new companion will be in Doctor Who Season 10 as of yet.
With the Christmas Special's title now out of the bag, perhaps we'll be seeing a new trailer for the Christmas Special very soon. Before the special debuts, though, stay tuned for more on the season finale Hell Bent, airing on December 5, along with more updates for this special. Do you think The Husbands of River Song could be the best Christmas Special yet? Let us know what you think after taking a look at the new photos.
