We finally have our first look at Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa as the fifteenth iteration of The Doctor, thanks to the newly released trailer for the return of Doctor Who next year. Released courtesy of the official Doctor Who YouTube channel, the footage offers not only our first glimpse at Gatwa’s Doctor, but also Neil Patrick Harris’ mysterious villain and the return of David Tennant and Cathrine Tate. Check out the trailer for Doctor Who below.

“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?” Gatwa’s Doctor cries out in the footage. This a question that many Doctor Who fans will be asking following the conclusion of last night’s episode, which saw Jodie Whitaker’s thirteenth Doctor oddly transform back into David Tennant’s tenth Doctor. Thus, also making him the fourteenth Doctor?

As well as our first look at Gatwa, the footage also offers our first glimpse at How I Met Your Mother and A Series of Unfortunate Events star Neil Patrick Harris as the villain of the piece. "My current gig," Harris has said of his role in Doctor Who. "Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, Russell T Davies. I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!"

Best known for his BAFTA-nominated role as Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education, Ncuti Gatwa has said that he is honored to have been chosen to continue the legacy of Doctor Who

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared,” Gatwa said when his casting was first announced back in May. “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

Led by David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who will reprise their roles as The Doctor and Donna Noble respectively, Doctor Who will also see Russell T Davies return as showrunner. “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars,” Davis said of casting Gatwa as The Doctor. “Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honor to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

Unfortunately, the 60th-anniversary episodes of Doctor Who are still a ways away and are not scheduled to be released until November 2023.
