The Downhill trailer has landed. Most of the world is arguing about The Rise of Skywalker or impeachment at the moment, so it's nice to have a black comedy for a small break. The upcoming dramedy stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell as the heads of a dysfunctional family on vacation in the Alps. Even after checking out the brief trailer, it's evident that Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell have a ton of on-screen chemistry, leaving one to wonder why they've never teamed up on the big screen before.

Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus took over Jimmy Kimmel's monologue last night to debut the Downhill trailer in a rather stealth way. The two interrupted the monologue to reveal that they get together weekly to discuss Hollywood gossip. While most talk show interviews to promote movies or TV shows follow the same format, Ferrell has been known to play with the format quite a bit over the years and this was no different, making for a fresh trailer debut.

Downhill is actually a remake of the 2014 Swedish black comedy Force Majeure, which was directed by Ruben Ostlund. The story revolves around a dysfunctional family on vacation as Will Ferrell's husband character runs away and leaves his wife and children behind when an avalanche occurs. Ferrell can be seen grabbing his phone and running as fast as he can while wearing ski boots. Obviously, Julia Louis-Dreyfus' wife character and the children are not very happy with the way things went down on the mountain. Ferrell's character is left to confront his selfish act and try to make amends with his family, who don't really seem like they're interested.

The American version of Downhill is written and directed by Academy Award winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who won for co-writing The Descendants. They made their directorial debut on the 2013 comedy The Way Way Back. Faxon and Rash co-wrote the remake with Jesse Armstrong. It's not clear if they adapted the new version directly from the original 2014 movie, but the basic premise remains the same. There will more than likely be some changes to the story for American audiences, but overall, it looks pretty similar.

Downhill hits theaters on February 14th, 2020, while the world premiere will be held at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26th, 2020. In addition to Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the comedy also stars Zach Woods, Zoe Chao, and Miranda Otto. While the trailer certainly looks promising, the remake has a lot to live up to. Force Majeure was released to rave reviews and currently has a 93% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Will Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus be able to breathe new life into the Swedish black comedy? We'll just have to wait and see.
