Peacock isn't letting go of Dr. Death just yet. Per Deadline, the Joshua Jackson-led medical drama series has officially been renewed for season 2 on the streaming platform. The second season of the series, based on the original Wondery podcast, will utilize the "Miracle Man" storyline from the podcast's third season. The first season of the TV show was based on the Wondery podcast's first season, following Jackson as Texas Neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a disgraced doctor responsible for at least 38 patients' deaths.

In season 2, Dr. Death will focus on Paolo Macchiarini, a surgeon nicknamed as the "Miracle Man" due his surgical accomplishments, but something else may be lurking beneath the surface of this image. The story picks up when investigative journalist Benita Alexander meets Macchiarini with a request to cover his story, and "the line between personal and professional begins to blur, changing her life forever." Macchiarini's facade begins to unravel when other medical professionals also uncover information about the "Miracle Man" that he'd much rather keep secret.

The new season will also see a change in showrunners, as season 1 writer Ashley Michel Hoban will serve as showrunner for season 2. Patrick Macmanus, showrunner of season 1, remains on board as an executive producer for season 2. Hoban also executive produces and will continue to serve as a writer. Also executive producing are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and Tayor Latham for Escape Artists, as well as Aaron Hart, Hernan Lopez, and Marshall Lewy for Wondery.

Dr. Death Season 2 Will Maintain the Show's Theme With New Characters

New showrunner Ashley Michel Hoban spoke out about how honored she is to continue the series with a new subject. As Hoban explains, the show will maintain its same eerie vibe that was present in season 1, even with an all-new story to explore.

“I am so honored to have the opportunity to expand the Dr. Death universe with this fascinating story,” Hoban said in a statement. “This season, we go global to explore how institutional failure to protect patients is a universal issue, but there are always heroes standing up and fighting for change every day. I can’t wait to share this story of romance, intrigue, complicated characters, and, of course, the eeriness that is Dr. Death with our fans.”

Lisa Katz, President Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, added: "The first season of Dr. Death blew us away as we dove into the terrifying, twisted mind of Dr. Christopher Duntsch and the team who set out to stop him. The new installment of this highly-addictive anthology series explores a globe-trotting surgeon who seduces the medical world, and we know we’re in expert hands with our partners at Wondery, UCP, Patrick Macmanus and new season EP/showrunner Ashley Michel Hoban.”

“Ashley Michel Hoban brings us even further into a reality that is far stranger than fiction with the next chapter from executive producer Patrick Macmanus and this extraordinary Wondery podcast,” Jennifer Gwartz, EVP, UCP, also said. “We’re thrilled Peacock wanted to build and expand on the original series with this new shocking story.”

Dr. Death is streaming on Peacock. Season 2 does not yet have a premiere date.
