Not much has yet been revealed regarding Paramount's Dungeons & Dragons reboot, but star Chris Pine has now presented possibly the best comparison that fans of the legendary fantasy tabletop role-playing game could hope for. In an interview with Collider, Pine compared the adaptation to both Game of Thrones and The Princess Bride, even adding in a sprinkle of Monty Python and the Holy Grail for good measure.

“Oh man. Well, what I will say is we had a hell of a fun time making it. There was a lot of laughs. The way that I've been describing it, it's like Game of Thrones mixed with a little Princess Bride, just a smidge of Holy Grail; it's somewhere in that ballpark. It's a lot of fun. It's got a lot of thrills. It's poppy, it's eighties heartfelt, there's a bit of Goonies in there. My character, he's the ultimate party planner. I think it's going to be really good. I mean, who f---ing knows, but I think we got a good shot and John and John are killer guys. They know comedy and they know heart and we had a great cast and we had a good time making it. And that's all you can ask for.”

It sounds like somewhere in between the dark, gritty complexity of Game of Thrones and the joyful family film that is The Princess Bride, Paramount have found the perfect tone for their take on Dungeons and Dragons. If nothing else, Chris Pine had a great time making the movie, describing it as “a lot of fun” and packed with “a lot of thrills.” Pine goes on to describe his character as “the ultimate party planner,” so no wonder he had so much fun.

Something that will no doubt worry fans of Dungeons and Dragons, however, is Pine’s insistence that the movie is going be really good...before quickly back-tracking and offering a more aloof opinion of the movie that they’ve made. Perhaps he was just too busy partying to notice whether the Dungeons and Dragons reboot is any good or not.

Based on the treasured, hugely popular role-playing game of the same name, the Dungeons and Dragons movie has been in development since 2015. The project finally made major headway in 2020, bringing in Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, with the duo attached to write and direct the project. Though not much is known about the direction of the movie, the project has slowly amassed an impressive cast, with Chris Pine being joined by Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong, and Daisy Head.

Goldstein and Daley have since offered some insight into the intended tone for the adaptation, with the filmmaker's hoping to create a fun movie while avoiding too much comedy, "We want it to be fun. It's not an out and out comedy, but it is an action-fantasy movie with a lot of comedic elements and characters we hope people will really get into and enjoy watching their adventures."

Dungeons & Dragons is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on March 3, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.
