Most great director's wind up directing a war movie at some point or another. It is something of a right of passage, it seems. Christopher Nolan is finally making his mark on WWII and taking a stab at a real life war story with his next movie Dunkirk. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the movie lately and Warner Bros. has just kicked things up a notch by releasing the first, and very epic, official poster for the movie, which is set to premiere next summer.

Warner Bros. released a brief and simple teaser for Dunkirk a few months ago, but now they are starting to get serious with the marketing campaign for the movie and this poster is a great start. While not detracting from the war-torn backdrop of the poster itself, it is also not shy at all about selling this movie based on the fact that Christopher Nolan is the guy doing it. It also sports the tagline "the event that shaped our world," which would normally sound a bit overdramatic, but since we're talking about WWII, that seems pretty fair. As for what's on the poster, we see a lone soldier standing by the ocean with his helmet in hand, looking at some flaming wreckage in the water, while some other soldiers are jumping off a boat into the ocean. There are also several fighter planes overhead, as well as some wreckage in the distance. There is a lot going on here.

Like the first teaser for Dunkirk, this first poster doesn't tell us a whole lot about the movie but also like the teaser, it is pretty stunning. We do know that the movie is based on the Dunkirk evacuation, in which, a large group of Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France, who were surrounded by the German army, were evacuated the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk during the Battle of France. The event is also known as the "Miracle of Dunkirk," so it should provide Christopher Nolan with plenty of incredible material to work with. Outside of that, we don't know much else, but we do now that a 7-minute prologue will be shown at select screenings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in IMAX 70mm. A similar strategy was employed by the director for The Dark Knight Rises.

Dunkirk will be Christopher Nolan's first attempt at a war movie, but as we have seen, he is very capable of tackling quite a few different genres very successfully. He has taken on the superhero genre with his Batman trilogy, which resulted in a ton of money at the box office and The Dark Knight, which many consider to be one of the if not the best superhero movie ever made. He has also tackled sci-fi with Interstellar and Inception, as well as the thriller and mystery genre with Insomnia, The Prestige and Memento. Even the worst of those movies is regarded pretty well and did good business at the box office.

Dunkirk is being written, co-produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. The Movie stars Tom Hardy, Oscar winner Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh and former One Direction member Harry Styles. Dunkirk is set for release on July 21, 2017.
