Patrick Creadon and Christine O'Malley, the pair behind the documentaries Wordplay and I.O.U.S.A., will write, direct and produce a one-hour documentary about Nickelodeon's hit cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, which is celebrating 10 years on the air.

According to Variety, the spec will be shown across various MTV Networks platforms in July.

SpongeBob SquarePants has been the top-rated animated program among kids 2-11 for more than seven straight years. The show is seen in 171 markets in 25 languages, and it's the most widely distributed property in the history of MTV Networks.

Nick execs made the first official trip to Sundance in the net's 30-year history to announce the doc. They also staged a cast reading in Park City on Sunday with the show's voice talent.
