Fast Five was the film that introduced Johnson's Luke Hobbs to the Fast & Furious franchise. An agent working for the Diplomatic Security Service, Hobbs was tasked with hunting down Dom, Brian, and Mia when they were framed for murdering his men. Fast Five was driven by impressive action set pieces such as the Rio heist, moving the franchise away from its street-racing roots.

A Breath of Fresh Air

The film was a major commercial success, grossing over $625 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Fast film at the time of its release. Many felt that the addition of Johnson and his tough-as-nails character Hobbs helped breathe new life into the fan-favorite franchise, with Empire commending the actor in their review: "How to re-ignite an aging franchise? Drop [Johnson] on it. The best thing, by far, in Fast Five ... Dwayne Johnson hulks through the movie leaving testosterone trails in his wake." This, combined with his joining the cast of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Journey 2 The Mysterious Island and those also becoming box office, helped garner him the nickname "franchise Viagra" as his involvement boosted these films' profitability. In the same year that Disney released Zootopia, they also released another blockbuster animated classic: Moana. Johnson voiced Maui, a legendary shape-shifter and the self-proclaimed "greatest demigod in all the pacific islands." He joined Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) on her quest to save the world, singing songs like "You're Welcome" along the way.

Disney Dominates the Box Office

According to Deadline, Moana was one of the most streamed films of 2021 and was the best-selling home release of 2017, amassing a revenue of $116.3 million. Of course, even during its 2016 theatrical run, Moana managed to gross an impressive $645 million. Johnson is set to reprise his role as Maui in the upcoming live adaptation of the Oscar-nominated Disney hit, which is scheduled to hit theaters in June 2025. Given that the movie is still a massive hit on streaming, there is no doubt that the live-action remake will be a box office hit and likely joining this list. Stream on Disney+

The original Jumanji that starred Robin Williams was a box office success, but it took more than two decades for another Jumanji film to get made. 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle finally gave Jumanji a modern update. While initial pre-release hype was more skeptical of the new film, given it seemed like such a major departure from the first film, by the time the movie came out and audiences saw it, the movie got a positive reception from both audiences and critics. The film starred Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and even Nick Jonas.

The Return of Jumanji

Thanks to the chemistry from the cast, as well as a fun script and solid direction, Jumani: Welcome to the Jungle was able to really shine. By the end of the film's theatrical run, it had grossed $962.5 million, and that amount has since further risen to $995.3 million from home release. The movie was a surprise box office hit by every metric, not only holding its own against Star Wars: The Last Jedi but also becoming the number 1 movie at the box office for three weeks in a row before dropping to number two and then gaining the number one spot for an additional week. Viewers appreciated both Johnson's sizzling portrayal of archaeologist Bravestone as well as Black's scene-stealing impersonation of a vain high-school teenage girl. Stream on Hulu
