SPOILER ALERT: Major spoilers for Black Adam lie ahead...

Black Adam star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has responded to Henry Cavill’s confirmation that he is once again the silver screen Superman. Taking to social media, Johnson declared that he has “fought for years” to bring back Cavill’s iteration of the Man of Steel, with the actor making a brief appearance during a post-credits scene at the end of the recent DC outing, Black Adam.

“We fought for years to bring you back. They always said no,” Johnson said regarding the return of Henry Cavill as Superman. But to @DanyGarciaCo @hhgarcia41 & myself no” was not an option.” Johnson continued, once again teasing his plans for the DC universe and stating that these plans could not have happened without the Man of Steel. “We can’t build out our DCEU w/out the world’s greatest superhero. And fans will always come first. Welcome home” Finally, Johnson further teases an eventual battle between Superman and Black Adam on the big screen saying, “I’ll see you down the road.”

The post credits scene featuring the return of Cavill’s Superman has been a badly kept secret for some time. The short sequence finds the Man of Steel stepping out of the smoke, sporting a spit-curl and brighter costume, and issuing an invitation for a little chat with Dwayne Johnson’s antihero. Cavill has since shared a clip of himself discussing his comeback, saying, "Hey everyone, I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch Black Adam. But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman.”

Much like Johnson, Cavill hinted at big things to come. “And the image you see on this post and what you saw in Black Adam are just a very small taste of things to come,” he continued. “So there's a lot to be thankful for, and I'll get to that in time. But I wanted to thank you guys most of all for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded."

Black Adam Versus Superman Will Be Much More Than a One-Off Fight

After years and years of being in development, Black Adam finally hit theaters earlier this month. Black Adam introduces Dwayne Johnson as the title character who, after nearly 5,000 years of being imprisoned, Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. Black Adam has been met with mixed reviews from critics, but audiences have really taken to it and no doubt cannot wait for what will come next.

One thing that is sure to come next is Black Adam versus Superman, though producer Hiram Garcia has stated that this will be far more than just one fight. "It's never been about a one-off or just about a fight. No, it's about so much more than that,” he said. “We really want to craft a long form of storytelling and show that these two characters exist in the same universe and are going to have to deal with each other often, either on the same or opposite sides. Hopefully, they're going to clash at some point, but it's not just about a ‘one fight’ situation. That was never our dream. That does not reward the fans. Fans want to feel a journey between these guys knowing that these guys exist in the same universe."

Black Adam is in theaters now.
