Batman: The Caped Crusader has announced a new crew member. Award-winning comic book writer Ed Brubaker has joined the production for the upcoming animated series. He will be the head writer and executive producer for the project. Additional people involved in the creative process are the Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm, director J.J. Abrams, director of the upcoming film The Batman Matt Reeves, and co-producer James Tucker.

In a statement discussing his work on the show, Brubaker said, "Here's something few people know, but the original Batman: The Animated Series was one of the things that made me want to write superhero comics in general, and Batman in particular." He mentioned Bruce Timm, as well as "all the talented writers and artists did with that show."

Brubaker talked about what led him to join the crew was the idea Timm, Abrams, and Reeves had for the show. He described the creators' vision as a "slightly more pulpy take on the character, and a new way of looking at the world of Gotham, set in the past but viewed through a modern lens." While explaining his experience working on the series, Brubaker said, "So far every part of it has been a blast to work on." He previewed the series when he said, "I can't wait until the rest of the world can see what we've been building the last few months in the writers' room. All I can say is, it's not what anyone is expecting … but in a good way."

In addition to his work for DC Comics, Brubaker had also written for Marvel when he had an acclaimed run on Captain America. A notable storyline in that comic series was the return of the Star-spangled hero's former sidekick Bucky Barnes. The latter was long thought to be dead, and in the new story, he became the assassin Winter Soldier. Additional highlights included Captain America's time during the Civil War event, his surprising death, and his eventual return. Brubaker is also known for his crime fiction series, such as TheFadeOut, Fatale and multiple volumes of Criminal. He has won multiple achievements, including 7 Eisner Awards and 2 Harvey Awards, along with many nominations. For those who are unaware, the Eisner Award is considered to top prize in the comic book industry.

Batman: The Caped Crusader was first announced back in May of last year. A summary describes the upcoming animated show as a "reimagining of the Batman mythology that will reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue's gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world." As previously mentioned, Bruce Timm co-created Batman: The Animated Series. That show is widely regarded as one of the best-animated TV shows of all time, as well as the best on-screen incarnation of Batman to ever exist. Timm talks about Batman: The Caped Crusader as "more Batman The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series." His description means that the upcoming show will be able to be even darker and noir-inspired than the 90s animated series was able to be.
