According to Variety, John Curran will direct Edward Norton in period drama The Painted Veil for Warner Independent Pictures and Stratus Film Co., with Naomi Watts in negotiations to star.

Production is set to start in September.

Set in 1922 London, story concerns a restless married woman who sets out on an odyssey of self-discovery that begins with cheating on her conservative scientist husband and ends with battling cholera in the Far East.

Ron Nyswaner adapted the script from the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Previous adaptations include 1934's The Painted Veil, starring Greta Garbo, and 1957's The Seventh Sin, directed by Ronald Neame for MGM.

Curran previously helmed We Don't Live Here Anymore, which WIP released last year.

Norton most recently starred in The Italian Job and wrapped Down in the Valley opposite Evan Rachel Wood.

Watts will next be seen in DreamWorks' The Ring Two.
