Shailene Woodley is in negotiations for the female lead in director Oliver Stone's upcoming Edward Snowden movie tentatively titled The Snowden Files. The Divergent star will play the girlfriend of the NSA whistleblower if she signs on, appearing opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden.

The Snowden Files will be distributed across the U.S. by Open Road. The film is based on Luke Harding's book The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man, as well as the upcoming book Time of the Octopus which was written by Edward Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

Luke Harding's nonfiction book follows Snowden as he moves from Hawaii to Hong Kong. There, he meets up with with documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald to hand over top-secret NSA documents. Edward Snowden later sought asylum in Moscow. Anatoly Kucherena's book traces the time spent at the Moscow airport before the Russian government decided to grant Edward Snowden his asylum.

Shailene Woodley has become notoriously picky about her projects, having already shot the sequel for Divergent, with two more franchise installments on the way. She was last seen in the hit drama The Fault in Our Stars, and has not signed on for a role since. The Snowden Files will likely be her next project.

Oliver Stone will produce The Snowden Files alongside longtime producing partner Moritz Borman. Preproduction has already begun in Germany. Principal photography begins in January.
