Last month, we showed you a new photo from Elysium, featuring Matt Damon as Max, an ex-convict fighting for equality in a world where elite citizens live on a space station known as Elysium. Today, a new photo has surfaced from director Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi thriller, offering our first look at Sharlto Copley as the villainous Kruger. The character is the right-hand man of Jodie Foster's Secretary Rhodes, a nefarious government official who wants to keep Elysium segregated from the rest of the oppressed population on Earth. Take a look at the photo, then read on to see what Sharlto Copley had to say about his character.
There were reports swirling this past summer that the District 9 actor was possibly channeling Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, as a reference for his character. The actor revealed that quote was taken out of context, while revealing the real inspirations he drew on to play Kruger.
"The Joker was a mistaken reference. I was really just saying that that was the last time I saw a villain that inspired me: somebody that set the bar. There's no connection or likeness to The Joker in terms of the character. What I did with him - which I try to do with all my original characters - was draw from real life. I combined references from a very infamous South African military battalion called 32 Battalion, that fought in the Border Wars in South Africa, and a stereotype of character that you get in the south of Johannesburg, where the guys are a little bit more comfortable with violence!"
