It's time for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories to merge into a single, genderless category according to The Crown star Emma Corrin. As someone who impressed critics with their performance as Diana, Princess of Wales in Netflix's The Crown, Corrin won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in addition to getting nominated for an Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Award. More recently, Corrin was nominated again for Best Actress at the Laurence Olivier Awards, this time for the stage show Anna X.

But Corrin has an issue with these award nominations. Corrin, who is non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them, says that the hope is that major awards show will evolve in the future to be more inclusive. This means doing away with gendered categories to allow everyone to feel represented. As they told BBC News:

"I hope for a future in which that happens. I don't think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment. It's about everyone being able to feel acknowledged and represented. It's difficult for me at the moment trying to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in female categories."

Corrin, who recently starred in My Policeman with Harry Styles and will next appear as the titular character in Netflix's Lady Chatterley's Lover, went on to further share their thoughts on representation in movies and television and where the focus should be moving forward.

"When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you're being nominated for a female role or a male role? You can discuss awards and the representation there, but really the conversation needs to be about having more representation in the material itself, in the content that we are seeing for non-binary people, for queer people, for trans people, because then I think that will change a lot. When those parts come up, meaning more people and more actors are playing those roles then I think there will be more of an urgency with which these questions will be addressed."

Will the Oscars and Other Awards Shows Be Mixing the Gendered Categories?

It's not an unrealistic scenario that Corrin is hoping for. The Grammy Awards have been gender-neutral for years, while the Brit Awards just recently merged the separate male and female categories into one solo award. It's also reported that the Baftas and the Oscars are considering the implementation of similar changes.

While this is a change some are wanting to see happen, it won't come without its criticism. Mixing the male and female categories together would eliminate many separate awards, heavily reducing every movie and TV star's chances of coming out with the win. In any case, Corrin says that they still want to play women and that this is "not a rejection of femininity," but just a way of allowing non-binary performers a chance to feel accepted at awards shows.

You can catch Corrin in Lady Chatterley's Lover when the film premieres on Netflix on Dec. 2.
