As part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Madame Web has yet to have many details revealed, including who Emma Roberts’ mystery character is. The actress recently opened up to give more insight into the role she plays in the movie, which will be hoping to avoid the same fate that the likes of Morbius received last year. Madame Web is one of several new Spidey-releated projects coming from Sony, with other titles including Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3. While speaking on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Roberts explained:

"What I can tell you is I'm not a superhero. Some people may think she's a superhero but not... like I don't have supernatural powers. So I can tell you that. [Madame Web] is really different from any of the other Marvel movies, it's super grounded. I love that it has so many great actresses, it's really female-driven, and I just think it's not going to be what people expect. So I'm really, really excited for everybody to see it, and by the way, I'm excited to see it, because I only worked like a week on it, so there's so much that I haven't seen. I did get to see the storyboards and read the script, and it's fantastic."

Madame Web will star Dakota Johnson in the title role, and with other stars such as Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Adam Scott and Mike Epps along with Emma Roberts. Last summer, it was revealed that the movie would be delayed by three movies, setting it a current release date of October 2023.

How Will Madame Web Fit In Sony’s Disjointed Spider-Man Universe?

Madame Web Using Her Clairvoyance
Sony Pictures Releasing

Sony’s direction for their non-MCU Marvel movies appeared to be leading to the introduction of Spider-Man with Morbius. However, despite images of the web-slinger appearing in Sony’s marketing for the movie, all references were scrubbed from the final movie, other than a very unconvincing and out of place set of post-credit scenes that hinted at Spider-Man arriving at some point in the future.

Whether that will be teased further with Madame Web is still unclear, but the character does have the potential to bridge a connection with the MCU once again, or could send the franchise down a whole other adjacent route that doesn’t involve the MCU’s Spider-Man, but a different variant of the character.

The ironically tangled web of Spider-Man rights is both offering the biggest benefits and the ultimate curse for Sony, as they have a number of Spider-Man characters, but the interest in them is clearly not that great unless they are connected to a Spider-Man of one description or another. With Tom Holland being the current MCU Spider-Man, it is still to be seen whether he will at some point cross over into Sony’s Universe to fight the growing group of adversaries waiting for him, or whether this could be building to a crossover for the group of villains into the MCU as the Multiverse Saga comes to its conclusion. Whether Madame Web will give a clue to Sony’s endgame will be seen later this year.
