Fans will not have to wait too much longer to see the return of Sherlock Holmes’ kid sister, Enola Holmes, as Netflix has now confirmed that the sequel will land on the streaming service later this year. Coming courtesy of a tweet shared by Netflix UK & Ireland, Enola Holmes 2 will be available to stream in 2022, though a more specific release date still alludes us.

Released in 2020, the first Enola Holmes introduced audiences to the lesser-known Holmes sister. An adaptation of the mystery-thriller book series of the same name, written by Nancy Springer, Enola Holmes chronicles the adventures of Sherlock Holmes' younger sister Enola, who, when her mother disappears, decides to become a super-sleuth in her own right. Running away to London, where she establishes a clandestine private detective career specializing in missing person investigations, Enola must also keep ahead of her brothers, who are determined to capture and force her to conform to their expectations.

Directed by Harry Bradbeer from a screenplay by Jack Thorne, Enola Holmes stars Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown as the titular super-sleuth, with Henry Cavill starring as Sherlock Holmes. The rest of the supporting cast includes Sam Claflin, Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge, Burn Gorman, Adeel Akhtar, Susie Wokoma, Hattie Morahan, and David Bamber. Enola Holmes received largely positive reviews from critics and quickly became one of the most-watched original Netflix outings, thanks to an estimated 76 million households watching the movie in its first four weeks.

While we await a more specific release date for Enola Holmes 2, some details regarding the direction of the sequel have already been revealed. "Now a detective-for-hire like her infamous brother, Enola Holmes takes on her first official case to find a missing girl, as the sparks of a dangerous conspiracy ignite a mystery that requires the help of friends — and Sherlock himself — to unravel," the synopsis for Enola Holmes 2 reads.

The sequel will see much of the same talent who brought the first outing to life return for more. Harry Bradbeer will once again helm Enola Holmes’ latest adventure, with Millie Bobby Brown reprising her role alongside Louis Partridge, Adeel Akhtar, Susie Wokoma, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, David Thewlis, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Enola Holmes 2 is unlikely to be the last time we will see the character, with director Harry Bradbeer hoping to launch a five movie franchise. "It'd be wonderful to get five more movies out of this scene,” the filmmaker said back in 2020. “I do think they're extraordinary stories to tell, and what a period. As you go forward, things like that three-wheeled car - which was a lovely thing we discovered - to find our characters playing on some of the new contraptions, at some point in the early 20th century. Of course, we get airplanes and the Wright brothers. Who knows what other challenges are going to come out of this really restless, productive period."

Enola Holmes 2 will land on Netflix later this year.
