The secretly filmed Eraser reboot, Eraser: Reborn, has now been given an official R rating, which the movie has achieved thanks to “violence throughout and language." The project, which was filmed very much under the radar during the summer of 2021 and will reboot the 90s action classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, has been directed by The Quiet Ones and Quarantine 2: Terminal filmmaker John Pogue.

While the confirmed R rating, news of which was revealed by Filmratings.com, suggests a similar approach to the material as its 1996 Schwarzenegger-starring predecessor, Eraser: Reborn will undergo some changes when bringing the franchise back to life. Taking over from the Austrian Oak is British actor and star of such small-screen projects as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, Dominic Sherwood, who will portray a wholly new character, rather than rebooting Schwarzenegger’s U.S. Marshal John "Eraser" Kruger.

Instead, Sherwood will play U.S. Marshal Mason Pollard (in an unfortunate character name downgrade). Aside from the change in actor and name, however, Eraser: Reborn’s U.S. Marshal Pollard will follow a similar path to Schwarzenegger’s Kruger, with the reboot’s synopsis revealing that the film follows “US Marshall Mason Pollard (Sherwood) who specializes in engineering the fake deaths of witnesses that need to leave no trace of their existence.”

Eraser: Reborn will see Dominic Sherwood starring alongside his Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments co-star Jacky Lai, with the pair joined by the likes of McKinley Belcher III (The Good Lord Bird), and Eddie Ramos (Animal Kingdom). Eraser: Reborn has some serious B-movie pedigree behind it, with director Jon Pogue having written the likes of U.S. Marshals and directed such beloved examples of the genre as Deep Blue Sea 3. The Butterfly Effect 2 and Jarhead 3: The Siege writer Michael D. Weiss meanwhile has penned the script for the Eraser reboot.

Released in 1996 and directed by Chuck Russell, the original Eraser finds Arnie starring as John "The Eraser" Kruger, whose impressive career has led to him being considered the top gun in the US Marshall Witness Protection scheme. Specializing in erasing their past and dealing with their future, Kruger’s latest assignment is whistle-blower Dr. Lee Cullen, who has evidence against a major arms corporation that's selling weapons to terrorists. While things begin well, there is danger nearer home for Kruger from within his own department, forcing him and Lee to go on the run.

Starring Vanessa Williams, James Caan, James Coburn, and Robert Pastorelli alongside the action movie icon that is Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eraser was a huge commercial success upon release, grossing over $242 million against a budget of $100 million. While the movie received mixed reviews from critics, who took issue with Eraser’s lackluster plot, the movie is typically explosive Schwarzenegger fare and has since become a favorite among fans of the Hollywood superstar.

So, while it does not look like Eraser: Reborn will follow the same character as the 90s Schwarzenegger classic, the newly confirmed rating does at least suggest that the reboot will not hold back where the action sequences are concerned. Eraser: Reborn is expected to be released sometime during the spring of 2022 by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
