Eternals Conquers Second Box Office Weekend with $27.5M

Clifford the Big Red Dog could not beat Marvel Studios' Eternals, landing in the second place this weekend.

Marvel Studios' Eternals retained the number one position at the box office this weekend. The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pulled in $27.5 million over the weekend, bringing its global total to $209.4 million. Eternals dropped 61% from its debut weekend, which is line with past MCU titles, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Black Widow. The box office success comes at a time when the MCU is receiving negative reviews from critics and long-time fans, who feel Eternals isn't in line with the rest of the Marvel titles.

Expectations for Eternals was abnormally high, due to the delayed release. The pandemic shifted the entire MCU release schedule, along with the release of all other big Hollywood productions that were set to hit theaters in 2020 and 2021. Venom: Let There Be Carnage received similar reviews to Eternals and has still managed to earn better-than-expected money since opening in theaters 7 weeks ago. To date, the Sony sequel has earned $430.3 million globally, exceeding expectations.

Clifford the Big Red Dog debuted at number two this weekend after earning $16.4 million. The computer animated family movie exceeded expectations and is currently streaming on Paramount+ for viewers who prefer to watch from the comfort of their own homes. Denis Villeneuve's Dune landed the third spot with $5.5 million. The long-awaited movie has been able to earn $339.6 million globally since debuting in theaters over a month ago. While reviews have been mixed, fans of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic are anticipating the second installment to wrap up the story.

No Time to Die came in at number four this weekend after bringing in $4.6 million. The latest installment in the 007 franchise has been able to earn $674.5 million globally during its time in theaters. Sony's Venom: Let There be Carnage took the fifth spot this weekend with $4 million and continues to earn new viewers in theaters who are looking forward to Jared Leto's Morbius, which opens in January 2022. Ron's Gone Wrong took the sixth spot with $2.2 million. The family movie has been receiving positive reviews from viewers and critics since its debut four weeks ago.

The French Dispatch came in at number seven this weekend after earning $1.84 million. The latest from Wes Anderson has received generally positive reviews from critics and stars Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lyna Khoudri, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Stephen Park, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson. Belfast took the eighth position with $1.8 million, while horror movie Antlers took the ninth spot after bringing in $1.2 million.
