Euphoria has proven to be HBO's biggest hit show of recent years. After debuting its first season in 2019, the show premiered its second season in January. With strong reviews and word of mouth turning more people on to the series, it managed to increase its viewership exponentially since season 1. Deadline reports that the acclaimed season culminated with a finale that has made the series the second most-watched program on HBO behind Game of Thrones.
The season 2 finale of Euphoria drew in 6.6 million viewers on HBO, up 30% from the previous week. This is also tremendously higher than the first season's finale episode, which pulled in about 530,000 viewers. Across all platforms, Euphoria is now averaging around 16.3 million viewers, making the show the best performance of a season for any HBO series since 2004, other than Game of Thrones. The season 2 premiere had reached around 19 million total viewers with all platforms factored in.
The social media response has also been indicative of the popularity of Euphoria. It was recently reported that the show is the most-tweeted-about series of the decade, with around 34 million tweets in the United States. Euphoria has also been ranked as the No. 1 program on HBO Max for seven consecutive weeks in the country and the top series of the week in both Latin America and Europe.
Euphoria Will Return For Another Season, Will It One Day Surpass Game of Thrones?
Many fans might be disappointed with the season over, as there are no new episodes of Euphoria on the immediate horizon. The good news is that HBO has already put in the order for a second season which is now in development. Given that the show has only gotten more popular with each episode leading up to season 2's finale, the upward trend could indicate that it will be even more popular when season 3 arrives. If the growth continues to rise, it's also possible Euphoria will surpass Game of Thrones someday as the most popular HBO series.
Euphoria is written, directed, and executive produced by creator Sam Levinson. Season 2 executive producers also include Kevin Turen, Ravi Nandan, Drake, Adel "Future" Nur, Zendaya, Will Greenfield, Ashley Levinson, Ron Leshem, Daphna Levin, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Gary Lennon, Mirit Toovi, Tmira Yardeni, and Yoram Mokady. The show is based on the Israeli series of the same name by Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin.
