Television has been all about the male gaze for a long time now. From shows like Game of Thrones to True Blood, male versus female bareness has never been equal; the latter is more on-screen staple than the former. However, in recent years shows like Euphoria has become all about equality when it comes to “baring it all” and stomping out the stigma. This revolution sets the stage for HBO Max’s upcoming series Minx.

The show, set to air on the streaming service on March 17, 2022, will have a 10-episode run. After the initial episode, two new episodes will air weekly through April 14, 2022. The series will be set in the 1970s with Los Angeles, California, as the backdrop amidst the historic upsurge of sexual publications. Through this gritty subtext, Minx is set to deliver a lovable sitcom focusing on a feminist editor whose dream is to publish a “real” women’s magazine for women by women and not the male-induced version of a women’s magazine that was popular at the time.

The viewers will be introduced to Joyce, played by Ophelia Lovibond, an ambitious and outspoken editor. Her goal for years has been to publish a women’s magazine about the real politics of being a woman in the '70s. She travels through publishers' festivals and trade shows, pitching her ideas only to be turned down time after time by handfuls of men. One even states as he looks at the mock-up magazine cover Joyce has shown of a woman marching, “Why is she so angry?” Feeling underappreciated and not taken seriously, Lovibond’s character is just about to call it quits. That is until she meets publisher Doug Renetti, played by Jake Johnson.

Renetti is willing to publish Joyce’s ideas, but there’s a catch: make it erotic. Initially off-put by his proposal, Renetti offers her a way of publishing her radical ideas in a way that men have been doing forever, through the guise of bare models and erotica. It’s an untapped market in the '70s, and they decide to go into business together. But the magazine will no longer have Joyce’s initial name, The Matriarchy Awakens, and instead gets renamed, Minx.

Minx: The Cast & Crew

Minx was created and written by Ellen Rapoport, the creative mind behind projects like Netflix's Desperados and Clifford the Big Red Dog. She is joined by Bridesmaids and Freaks and Geeks creator and director Paul Feig. The show is bound to be a hit with these two minds alone, but the genius doesn’t stop there. Unpregnant director Rachel Lee Goldenberg directed and produced the pilot episode, ensuring the series will kick off with a hilarious bang.

Not only is the crew of the HBO Max series stacked, but the cast is as well. Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson lead the way as the series mains. Lovibond is most recognizable as Carina, the Collector’s secretary in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Kitty Winter in the CBS series Elementary. At the same time, Johnson is known for his memorable stint on New Girl as Nick. Joining them will be actors Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, and Gillian Jacobs, whom audiences might recognize from Shameless, The Righteous Gemstones, and Fear Street, respectively.

Release Date

Minx will premiere on HBO Max on March 17, 2022. It has been renewed for a second season as well.

Why HBO's Minx Will Succeed

Everything About HBO Max’s Minx

The raunchy sitcom will surely inspire shock and awe solely for the subject it deals with. However, there is more to the show than meets the eye, and audiences shouldn’t shy away simply because of that. While powered by pleasure, the series will deliver episodes geared toward stigmas, the advertising industry’s history of sexism, and the politics of feminist duality. While it will surely be a beacon for controversy and criticism, the show aims to deliver a multilayered masterpiece.

Being set in the adult film industry, Minx is more than likely to show a few bare bodies here and there... or quite a bit. But unlike shows in the recent past where female bodies have dominated the screen, Minx will show full-frontal from both female and male actors, a practice Euphoria has also taken up to de-stigmatize the issue.

Overall, the series and its actors radiate fun, heart, and smarts from the instant they appear on the screen. The show approaches the gritty and raunchy with a flare of happy, healthy, and consensual energy that will attract viewers from every walk of life. Not only are audiences excited for Minx to drop, but cast member Taylor Zakhar (Kissing Booth 2) is also thrilled, stating in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“I haven’t been this excited for a show in a long time. The world’s just really going to enjoy it.”
