As the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi approaches, Ewan McGregor has revealed a little more about the feel of the show and how it plays out like one long movie rather than being episodic. Although there are many TV shows that are all about delivering a contained story in each episode while moving along the overall season narrative, it looks like between Deborah Chow’s direction and the type of story Obi-Wan Kenobi wants to tell, the newest Star Wars series is going to feel more like one continuing tale across all of its episodes.

Ewan McGregor’s return to the Star Wars Saga has resulted in one of the most anticipated Disney+ series of the year. The limited series runs for six episodes, starting with a double episode premiere on May 27, and will also see Hayden Christensen returning to the role of Darth Vader, who will be facing off against his former master once more. There are currently few specific details known about the plot of the series, other than it sees Kenobi being hunted down by Vader’s Inquisitors as he heads towards that climactic rematch with his old student.

While appearing at a recent press conference, McGregor discussed how the show will tell its story and used The Mandalorian to describe the contrasting way Obi-Wan Kenobi will approach its series format. As reported by SlashFilm, McGregor said:

"The technology's so different from when we made the [prequel] movies. It felt like a different experience anyway. But I don't think it was because it was a TV show. The beauty of it being a series is that we've got longer to tell the story. But because [Deborah Chow] directed [all the episodes] and it's her singular vision throughout, it did feel like we were making one movie. And the episodic nature of our series, it falls really cleverly in the storyline, but it is one driving narrative. I think 'The Mandalorian' feels more episodic, if you like, because it suits that storytelling. And, of course, [it] has a driving storyline through each season. But ours is like a movie that just happens to be split up into these episodes."

Although there is no doubt that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series tells a story about McGregor’s Jedi Master, as more details were revealed about the show, it is clear that it is as much a Darth Vader story as a Kenobi one. With Hayden Christensen returning as the iconic villain, the series has given the actor the chance to explore the character of Vader more. He previously said:

“This is sort of a point in the timeline that hasn't really been explored yet, and I think that the character of Darth Vader is at an interesting point in his life, in terms of what has happened before and where we left him in Episode III. He's very much sort of trying to reconcile his past, and hunting down the Jedi... obviously it's his job and he's mandated by the Emperor, but it's more than that. It's a personal mission for him.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi, like many recent Star Wars projects, allows Lucasfilm to fill in some of the gaps in the Star Wars timeline, bringing back fan-favorite characters in ways that expand the universe and also tell new stories about familiar faces. With Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently detailing a plan to now look to the future in the upcoming wave of Star Wars movies, this current run of “historical” entries could be some of the last to feature well-known characters of the franchise.
