Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have known each other for a very long time, starring together in the feminist comedy classic 9 to 5 in 1980. In recent years, they've been on somewhat of a kick together, earning a great deal of accolades and love as the titular characters in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie and then having a lot of fun together for the film Moving On. They recently collaborated yet again for the sweet football comedy 80 for Brady, this time bringing Sally Field and Rita Moreno into the fold.

80 for Brady is a heartfelt tale of aging and female friendship set in 2017, that follows four older woman who also happen to be diehard fans of the New England Patriots, who are going to the Super Bowl in Houston that year. The four of them head to the game with tickets won from a radio giveaway and, through silly mishaps and wild turns of events, find themselves having the time of their lives and rekindling their friendships. If a sense of mutual respect and love exudes from the screen, that's because there is a genuine fondness and admiration between the women in real life.

You can check out an exclusive behind the scenes clip below which briefly explores those relationships.

The Mutual Respect of Icons Fuels 80 for Brady

Field, who deserves much more credit for the quietly stunning work she's been doing in recent projects like Dispatches from Elsewhere and Hello, My Name Is Doris, is about a decade younger than Fonda and Tomlin, and seemingly looks up to the two women. "Jane has been a friend of mine for 40 years," said Field in mild disbelief. "I've known Lily a long time as well. She kind of brought me into the world of activism."

The more gentle Field provides an excellent counterbalance to the strong and sometimes hilariously assertive Fonda and Tomlin, who proved their toughness over decades of powerfully independent characters. Their whole careers seemed to shout, 'Don't underestimate me because I'm a woman,' and together with Grace & Frankie, this phase of their career now suggests, 'Don't underestimate me because I'm in my 80s.'

That's been one of the most positive aspects about not just the Netflix series but also 80 for Brady — the work these women are doing has been greatly inspiring to anyone who is growing older, who feels like they might be left behind by a busy world, who doesn't see another second chance coming.

80 for Brady is touching and inspirational because it evokes the feeling that it's never too late, not for aspirations, not for adventures, and certainly not for joy. So much of this is powered by that aforementioned chemistry and respect between the legendary actors. "I have great admiration for her," said Tomlin of Fonda in this behind the scenes interview, "and I love the other two women, too. I mean, they've had incredible careers."

Rita Moreno, while not featured in this clip, shouldn't be forgotten here. While this is the first time the actress is working with these other icons, her whole career is an inspiration and testament to the same themes of 80 for Brady. At 91 years old, the Oscar-winner is about to star in the new Fast and Furious film. Moreno, like the other stars and 80 for Brady itself, proves that it's never too late.

80 for Brady is now available on Premium Video-On-Demand and to purchase digitally from Paramount Home Entertainment, ahead of its Blu-ray and DVD release on Mother's Day, May 2. Fans who buy the film on digital platforms will have access to over 45 minutes of features and behind-the-scenes interviews like this one.
