Yesterday I had the chance to speak with Ron Perlman, who stars in the upcoming action-adventure Bunraku, which hits theaters on September 30 and is currently available on VOD formats. After we spoke about his hit FX series Sons of Anarchy, I also asked him about some of the numerous movie projects he has lined up in various stages of development. It seems that the one he is most excited about is a unique comedy entitled Frankie Go Boom, which also stars his Sons of Anarchy cast mate Charlie Hunnam. While we are used to seeing Ron Perlman as the larger-than-life tough guy, he shows a different side in this project... where he plays a woman. Here's what he had to say about Frankie Go Boom below.
"I'm really excited about this project I did with Charlie Hunnam in the off-season called Frankie Go Boom. Hopefully it's going to be playing at the Sundance Film Festival. It's the funniest script I've read in 30 years. I play a character who used to be called Phil, and is now Phyllis. He's not just a transsexual, he's a complete transgender. You'll see me be the ugliest broad you've ever seen, in the history of womanhood. I can't wait to see it. I have not seen it yet, but it's quite funny. Charlie is the lead, he plays Frankie. If I only play a woman once in my life, it will be in this one."
I also had to ask about the possibility of Hellboy 3, which Ron Perlman is still hoping will come to pass.
"I wait patiently. Write your Congressman."
Back in June, Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola indicated that Guillermo del Toro, who directed Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, will not be back to direct Hellboy 3. Perhaps if enough of you "write your Congressman" as Ron Perlman requested, we may be able to change the director's mind.
Be sure to check back in the near future for my full interview with Ron Perlman.
