The sequel to Extraction is coming next year. On Tuesday, Netflix made the announcement that Extraction 2 will be coming to the streaming platform sometime in 2023. Though the film wrapped shooting in April, there had been continued speculation about when the anticipated sequel will be released. Netflix does not typically divulge exact premiere dates until much closer to release but now we know for sure that part two of the story won't be here until next

Extraction is currently the fifth most popular movie on Netflix, so it wasn't a big surprise when a sequel was put into the works. Released in 2020, the first film was written by Joe Russo based on a story by Russo, Anthony Russo, and Ande Parks. Sam Hargrave directed the feature which starred Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda (his international film debut), Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi and David Harbour. It follows a mercenary named Tyler Rake who goes on a mission to save an Indian drug kingpin's son in Bangladesh, but plans change when he is double-crossed.

It was revealed soon after the release of Extraction that Joe Russo would be penning the sequel with both Hargrave and Hemsworth also back on board. Filming started in December 2021 and was wrapped up in April. At last year's TUDUM, Netflix had released the first teaser trailer for Extraction 2, confirming the return of Hemsworth as Tyler Rake. While some fans may question how this is possible as Tyler was seemingly killed in the first movie, others will say to look a little closer at the original film's ending which teases that the mercenary has in fact survived.

This news comes at the same time as Netflix announcing its plans to turn The Gray Man into a cinematic universe. That movie, which comes from the Russo Brothers and stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, debuted at No. 1 at Netflix worldwide this month. That has convinced the streamer to go ahead and order a sequel, as well as a separate spinoff movie written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool).

"The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal," directors Joe and Anthony Russo said in a statement provided by Netflix. "We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for The Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”

Scott Stuber, Head of Global Film, added, "With The Gray Man, the Russos delivered an edge-of-your-seat spectacle that audiences around the world are loving. We're excited to continue to partner with them and the team at AGBO as they build out The Gray Man universe."

Extraction and The Gray Man are both streaming on Netflix.
