Extraction director Sam Hargrave has explained why the upcoming Extraction 2 is a sequel rather than the once-rumored prequel. Speaking with Collider, the former stuntman-turned-filmmaker revealed that keeping plans for Tyler Rake’s next adventure close to the chest was enforced by writer and producer Joe Russo, with both he and Hargrave concluding that “You don’t want to give too much away too early.” Ultimately, the decision to go forward instead of back was made to answer the questions that many were left with following the first movie.

“I don’t think you can [leave] an audience with that ending and then not go figure out what happened because that’s the question. Everyone’s like, “What? How? Who? When? How did that happen?” And so, we have to answer that question.”

The main question left dangling after the first Extraction is how Chris Hemsworth’s action hero Tyler Rake survived the cavalcade of bullets that he took to the torso during the finale. Not only will dealing with this “be more powerful,” according to Hargrave, but the director wonders about how a potential prequel would handle the stakes.

“If we go backwards, now you’re rehashing the similar things of his past, right? It’s hard to get more emotionally fraught and higher stakes than your son dying of cancer, leukemia, right?”

So, much like its predecessor, which revealed that Tyler Rake lost his son to cancer while he was away with the military – a tragedy that led to him and his wife divorcing - Extraction 2 will continue to hint at Rake’s past and how he came to have nothing to lose.

Audiences don’t have much longer to wait before once again embarking on an impossible mission with Tyler Rake, as Extraction 2 is due to land on Netflix later this month. Back from the brink of death, Extraction 2 picks up with Hemsworth’s unstoppable action hero having recovered from the multiple gunshots he endured in the first outing. The sequel sees Rake return to what he does best – taking on seemingly impossible missions to rescue someone – and is tasked this time around with another deadly mission: saving the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.

Based on the graphic novel 'Ciudad' by Ande Parks, Extraction 2 finds Chris Hemsworth reuniting with director Sam Hargrave alongside Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo's AGBO as producers, and with Joe Russo having once again penned the script. The cast includes Golshifteh Farahani, who reprises her role from the first Extraction, with the likes of Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Tinatin Dalakishvili, Andro Jafaridze, Daniel Bernhardt, Tornike Gogrichiani, Levan Saginashvili, and George Lasha also set to feature alongside Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake.

Everyone involved in Extraction 2 has big plans for the franchise’s future, with Hargrave revealing that Extraction 3 is already in the early stages. "Fingers crossed, if people enjoy the second one, there already is — and this is without spoiling anything — but there is a story in development for a third movie in the works,” he said earlier this week.

Extraction 2 is scheduled to be released by Netflix on June 16, 2023.
