In a surprise move, The Wrap reported that Warner Brothers have decided to shelve the 'nearly complete' Batgirl film. The film, which comes with a price tag of around $70 Million dollars was set to star Leslie Grace as the titular heroine and understudy of the Caped Crusader, alongside the likes of Tim Drakes, Robin, Nightwing, Huntress, later iterations of the Jason Todd 'Red Hood' and so many others that make up the comics' version of the 'Bat Family.'Shortly after the film was announced as axed, fans that were looking forward to the film took to Twitter in hopes of achieving a #ReleasetheSnyderCut moment. This time around, fans were using the hashtag #ReleasetheBatgirlCut, Here are a few reactions from fans who have voiced concerns so far.
Batgirl Getting Axed Means Millions Go Down the Drain
In fact, several users pointed out, quite correctly, the economical fallacy in a move like this. If the film costs $70 Million dollars, releasing the film, even as bad as it seems, would make sense to get some investment back. Then again, in a time when red meat is literally rotting off of shelves at the grocery store, the current economic climate is indeed a far cry from the 80s and 90s when and if an airplane wasn't sold out, the carrier would sell to consumers for $1 at flight time just to sell the seat and get something out of it.
Regardless of how it looks or feels, Warner Bros. clearly believes that taking a bath on the film is a better choice than to release it, even to HBO Max which is where the Snyder Cut ended up. Batgirl was not the only film to be canceled today by Warner Brothers, as the sequel to Scoob! was also tossed aside. Warner Bros. Discovery has released a statement about the news which you can read below.
"The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership's strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future."
