Fargo, one of the most entertaining and dramatic renderings of the criminal underworld featuring crime syndicates, crime families, and criminal investigations, made its debut in 2014. Noah Hawley's creative genius was unmistakable from episode one of the first season. Hawley's depiction of criminal life through the lens of drama and comedy demonstrated his eye for what made for riveting tv. The season's success was underscored by its acclaim and various recognitions, which solidified the franchise's success.

Fargo finds its foundations in a 1996 cinematic release by the same name under the direction of Joel and Ethan Coen, the Coen brothers. However, the series is creatively distinct in its ability to weave new and exciting stories winding through the Midwest. Season One began its run with "The Crocodile's Dilemma," an episodic masterpiece introducing fans to Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thorton) and Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman). The addictive plot was centered on Lester, an unsuspecting salesman whose life is flipped upside down when meeting the likes of Malvo. Their strained, tenuous, and unlikely interaction led to weeks of spell-binding content. An apparent intersection of a solid plot and a stellar cast made Fargo a show not to be missed.

Here is what audiences can expect for season 5.

The Return of Fargo

Why Fargo Creator Noah Hawley Returned for Season 4 After Thinking He Was Done (1)
AMC

Fargo held its successful position for four years, with the most recent season beginning in the fall of 2020. This time the plot followed the tense interaction between African American Crime Syndicate and the Italian Mafia. And it cleverly depicted an all-out turf war in 1950s America. That season concluded in November 2020. After a two-year hiatus, a lack of confirmation on a follow-up season fueled speculation that the Fargo franchise might end with season four.

At the time, even for Hawley, the answer was not definitive. While he had more ideas begging to be put on a reel, he was unsure of the series' continuance. Hawley told Entertainment Weekly in a 2020 interview:

"I don't know where this thing goes or where it ends. I certainly don't want to overstay my welcome. Some people think four seasons are too much. I have the germination of an idea, but a lot of work must be done to ensure it's worthy."

However, the long silence was quelled in February of this year. A winter release of an impending line-up of returning and canceled shows hinted at a renewal of Fargo. And a recent cast member of the cast and on-set photos provided more proof that season five was on the way. So here is everything we know about the highly anticipated return of Fargo.

Season 5: The Plot

Fargo TV Show Characters
AMC

As with most shows in the early stages of production, little has been released regarding the plot. However, we know the new installment will take place in a 2019 pre-pandemic world. Furthermore, the setting remains in the Midwest, and kidnapping seems to be the storyline's center. It was an earlier teaser that confirmed this for fans. As Newsweek notes, "Fargo has traveled through decades, cities, and families, and the fifth installment will be no different: Set in 2019, when is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn't yours?"

Additionally, this installment will be slightly different in tone. While Seasons 1-4 struck a balance between drama and comedy, FX Chairman John Landgraf has confirmed a clear shift in the comedic direction, saying:

"It’s always a balance between how dramatic versus comedic it is, and this [season 5] is the more comedic end of the spectrum. I really love it.”

Season 5: The Cast

One thing John Lyons (casting director) has mastered is a selection of superb actors and actresses. Over four years, Lyons has cast a roster of stars who are unrivaled in their portrayal. More than a few stars have delivered edge-of-seat performances, including Chris Rock, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan McGregor, and Patrick Wilson. And the excellence continues based on what we know of the season five cast.

Per an earlier announcement, earlier confirmed season five cast members include Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. And according to a more recent post, Fargo season five will also consist of recent additions, Joe Keery, Lamorne Morris, and Richa Moorjani.

John Hamm, known for his roles in Thirty-Rock, Mad-Men, and the narrator of Legion, is being cast as Roy. Jennifer Jason Leigh, known for Annihilation, Weeds, The Hateful Eight, and Twin Peaks, will be on board as Lorraine. Juno Temple of Horns, Black Mass, and Ted Lasso, who Landgraf defines as a leading lady surprisingly capable, will take on the role of dot a housewife has a secret. And there is undoubtedly no dispute that the newer additions Joe Kerry (Stranger Things), Lamorne Morris (New Girl), and Richa Moorjani (Never Have I Ever) will bring their brand of brilliance to the new season.

There is currently no release date. However, A new and eager cast member's post on social media hints at when filming will start. In the words of Moorjani:

"Aw jeez…grateful and excited beyond words to join the fantastical world of @Fargo. And SOS - please send vegan winter coats my way immediately"

Some believe past release dates are good indicators of future releases. Given this, it is highly likely that season five may premiere on FX in the spring or fall of 2023. Nevertheless, a year seems quite the wait, which leaves plenty of time for fans to catch up on all the drama by watching seasons 1-4 currently streaming on Hulu.
