Director Louis Leterrier has teased war and casualties in the upcoming action sequel Fast X, which will act as the first part of the franchise’s conclusion. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Leterrier reveals that Fast X could be the one that changes everything, even hinting that we may lose some major characters as the long-running series races towards its conclusion.

“There’s a war brewing. It’s coming to an end, and it is a race to the finish. There will be some tremendous casualties.”

While the Fast and Furious has seen most of Dom’s family survive against insurmountable odds, Fast X, and the conclusive Fast and Furious 11, could see Leterrier swinging the scythe and brining the emotion as Dominic Toretto and his crew face the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced.

Indeed, Fast X finds a terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past fueled by blood revenge and determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves forever. After taking out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes back in 2011’s Fast Five, Reyes’ son, Dante, has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

This is not the first time that Leterrier has teased an emotional outing for the Fast and Furious crew, with the director even revealing that Fast X will end on a “big” cliffhanger. "This one is big. You know, I don't want to oversell it, but what we're planning on the next one is just gigantic, in terms of action, scope and emotion. You will feel all the feels. Tears will roll," he said last month.

And who better to cause casualties and smash apart the status quo than Aquaman star Jason Momoa, who joins the Fast and Furious franchise as the villain of the piece, Dante Reyes. The son of major drug lord Hernan Reyes, who Dom and his family killed in earlier installment Fast Five, Dante is back and seeking revenge against Dom and his crew for his father's death.

“Dante is in awe of Dom. He’s analyzed him,” Letterier said of Momoa’s bad guy. “There’s nowhere to hide, because he knows Dom better than he knows himself. Dom truly meets his match with Dante. Family goes both ways. There’s family on your side. There’s also family on the other person’s side. When the family that was your super-strength becomes your Achilles’ heel, it’s where you’re going to get wounded the most.”

Fast X stars a large ensemble cast containing both old and new faces, including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jason Momoa, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, John Cena, Jason Statham, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, and Rita Moreno.

Fast X is scheduled to be released on May 19, 2023, by Universal Pictures. Fast and Furious 11 has not yet been given a release date.
