The Fast family is headed down the home stretch with the two-part chapter of what will be the last installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. Since the release of their first movie, The Fast and the Furious, back in 2001, the franchise has now been around for over a decade. The Fast and Furious movies started as a story about fast cars and racers. Since then, it has moved away from its humble beginnings and evolved into a world-famous action franchise that has even accomplished the feat of sending a few of its characters to space. One could say that even the sky hasn’t been the limit for the franchise! With Fast and Furious 10, now officially titled Fast X, set to be the first half of the last chapter of the saga, the action-packed adventures of the adrenaline-loving family are finally coming to a close. According to star Vin Diesel’s Instagram post, captioned “Day One,” on April 20, 2022, the film has officially begun production. Although not many details of the film have been made public yet, here’s all we’ve rounded up regarding the highly anticipated second-to-last film of the saga.

All We Know: Plot

Fast and Furious
Universal Studios

Plot details of the film have been kept under tight wraps. However, given the track record of past movies, the possibilities for Fast X seem endless. The family has already gone to space. Who knows where they might end up next? Some of what we know of the plot comes from Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto, claiming that Fast X has a lot hiding under the covers. Stoking fan anticipation, Diesel, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, said"

“Just wait for 10. Let's just say, the fact that you guys know that the studio is saying we can't cover all this ground that needs to be covered in just one movie, you can only imagine what is to come."

An educated guess can also be made that the story may focus on Han, who reveals himself to Deckard Shaw, the man who “killed” him, in the post-credits scene of F9. Han being brought back into the fold and revealed to Shaw, much to the latter’s surprise, could presumably hold a considerable space in Fast X’s narrative as Han faces off with Shaw. Sung Kang, talking to Digital Spy, said:

"I think there's still some questions that are unanswered. It's a taste of where Han can go and where Deckard Shaw can go, because everybody loves Jason Statham. We're honoured to have him in our universe, so why not?”

Given the Instagram post of Charlize Theron, captioned “She’s back, baby, " we can safely assume that Fast X's plot will focus on Theron’s character, Cipher. Cipher will most likely team up with the newest villain of the series, played by Jason Momoa.

Another turn for the story to take would be for the film to focus on the children of Dominic and Brian. Given that the franchise has always had a heavy emphasis on the theme of family, this storyline would fit right in with the characteristics of the franchise.

With numerous possibilities in terms of plot, ascertaining one direction for the movie is a challenging task. Given Diesel’s claims, existing pathways for Fast X to take, and the franchise’s affinity for giving viewers completely unexpected surprises, only time will tell where the plot of Fast X will go.

All We Know: Cast

Fast and Furious
Universal Pictures

Most cast members of the franchise will be making a return in Fast X. Returning members include Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, John Cena as Jakob Toretto, Sung Kang as Han, Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pierce, Ludacris as Tej, Nathalie Emmanuel as Ramsey, Charlize Theron as Cipher, Helen Mirren as Magdalene Shaw and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw.

Fans of the franchise will be surprised to know that Jordana Brewster was almost excluded from the cast of Fast X. Diesel commented on Brewster’s exclusion and the decision to ultimately include her in the movie. Taking to Instagram, Diesel wrote,

“…When the F10 script came in, it excluded Mia Toretto…. Someone whom I’ve attributed the brotherhood of Dom and Brian to… I was so disappointed that I couldn’t see how I could continue…Side note, you will never believe who corrected the very important role of Mia… my daughter, the Alpha Angel, who told the director very plainly and honestly “NO MIA NO FAST 10!” haha.”

An interesting new addition to the cast is Aquaman actor Jason Momoa, who will be joining the franchise as a villain in Fast X. Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson and Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melchior have also officially been recruited as new members of the franchise. Their roles have not been announced yet.

It has also been confirmed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will not be returning to join the Fast family. Johnson, who has had a tense relationship with Vin Diesel, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in July 2021, confirmed his absence:

“… I’ve wished them well. I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”

All We Know: Other Details
