After many false starts and a virtual graveyard of directors, Flashpoint will now officially be directed by Game Night helmers Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley. It had been previously assumed that the duo responsible for writing Spider-Man: Homecoming were already officially on board, but it appears that they were only in very public talks to take over the DCEU's Flashpoint movie. This is exciting news for DC fans who have been waiting for Barry Allen's solo big screen debut for what seems like forever now.
John Francis Daley took to social media to post a gif of the Flash speeding up a wall with a simple caption that reads, "It's happening!" Daley and Jonathon Goldstein have been in talks with DC Films and Warner Bros. reportedly since the beginning of the year, but nothing concrete had been announced by either party, it was simply assumed that the duo were on board due to their excitement. In a recent interview, John Francis Daley mentioned that they were given a list of potential things to work on from Warner Bros. and DC Films and that they simply chose the Flashpoint movie.
The DCEU has been in a state of behind-the-scenes changes since the blockbuster release of Wonder Woman last summer and the perceived box office and critical failure of Justice League. It had been rumored since last summer when the Flashpoint movie was quietly announced, that it would be the movie to reshape the DCEU. However, a lot has changed since then and it looks like Warner Bros. and DC Films are looking to start a separate banner that will begin with the standalone Joker origin movie.
Flashpoint has a pretty bizarre storyline that may be difficult to translate to the big screen in one movie, so it could end up in a set or trilogy all on its own with the implications that it has on the future of the DCEU. Barry Allen has to go back in time to stop the murder of his mother, which results in a completely different universe where there is no Justice League and Bruce Wayne is dead while his parents are alive. Thomas Wayne ends up as Batman while Martha Wayne later turns into the Joker. Wonder Woman is at war with Aquaman and Superman is a weapon of the government.
This news should be exciting for DC fans who have been waiting a long time to see Barry Allen on the big screen in his own movie. It will be interesting to see what Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have planned for the Flashpoint movie. For now, this is a developing story and more news is imminent. Now that Daley has announced that its official, DC Films and Warner Bros. will be making a statement shortly and hopefully we get a synopsis as well.
