According to Variety, Focus Features has joined forces with Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Prods. and Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions to adapt Joseph O'Neill's novel Netherland for the big screen.

Christopher Hampton is going to write the script. Mendes might also be onboard as the director.

Netherland won O'Neill the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. The novel takes place in New York City. It follows a lonely Dutch expatriate who starts playing cricket and this brings him closer to immigrant culture.

"We're so glad to have Christopher join our creative partnership with Harpo and Neal Street," stated James Schamus, Focus Features CEO. "This project's emotional power has resonated with us all."
